Stockhausen Licht 6 June
Smart Light Sydney presents a day-long event around the controversial and recently deceased Stockhausen, one of the few avant-garde composers to have succeeded in penetrating the popular consciousness.
This FREE one day festival will culminate in the long-awaited Australian premiere of extracts from Licht, Stockhausen’s most ambitious seven day-long music-theatre cycle.

This is a FREE EVENT. Tickets will be available from 10AM to 6PM from Monday 1 June – Friday 5 June at the reception counter, Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Limited tickets will be available on the concert day, Saturday 6th June. Tickets are limited to 2 per person, per performance.
PROGRAM
2.00pm Lichtruf - Call to Light
The Conservatorium Foyers come alive with Stockhausen’s fanfare for the 21st century, the nucleus of his most gigantic music project, Licht (Light).
3.00pm Zodiac - Australian Premiere
Stockhausen’s most hummable piece, a hymn to the twelve Star Signs is performed by the members of Ensemble Offspring, including rising percussion star, Claire Edwardes with an introductory talk by Andrew Ford.
4.00pm Lichtruf and Oberlippentanz (Dance of the Upperlip)
Three woodwind instruments will perform this piece in the Conservatorium Foyer, representing the cycle of the seven days of the week.
5.00pm The Seven Days
Staged in the Verbruggen Hall, The Seven Days Concert features Stockhausen most iconic works, including ‘Stop’ and ‘Ylem’ – the musical rendition of a nuclear explosion.
Licht is a seven part opera, a seven-day journey of musical creation. A highlight of this concert is the Australian premiere of ‘The Seven Songs of the Day’, performed by Australia’s leading vocal ensemble, The Song Company.
6.45pm Michael’s Farewell
As dark approaches the Licht festival, a five-trumpet fanfare will perform an emotional piece, written for Stockhausen’s son, performed in the foyers of the Conservatorium
8.00pm Act 1: Invasion-Explosion
The long-awaited Australian premiere of the complete Act II from Tuesday from Licht will see musicians whom have studied with Stockhausen himself perform in one big electronic soundscape. This not-to-be-missed piece will see some of the most astonishing electronic music ever conceived performed for the first time ever in Australia.
9.30pm Hymnen (Anthems) and Hymnen re-mix
Based on the national anthems from all over the world, Hymnen is electronic music that changed the course of history.
In the Music Workshop, audiences can hear the complete original electronic track whilst upstairs the Con Café will host an experimental electronic music session, where young composers and sound artists from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music will be remixing Stockhausen’s work live, coordinated by Ivan Zavada.
The Licht Concert Series is a collaboration between Smart Light Sydney and Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with support from New Music Network, ABC Classic FM, Goethe Institut and Stockhausen Stiftung.
