Tree and Bench
Lining the slope of Observatory Hill is a series of beautiful old trees, each with their own individual park bench attached like a piece of fruit.
Trees and Bench by Reinhard Germer, Tim Geary & Fiona Venn from Meinhardt Light Art will invert and emphasise this functional unity of natural and man-made objects through light.
The park benches will be lit from the trees to give the impression of natural winter moonlight though the foliage, while the trees will be up lit with an artificial coloured light.
What’s Smart?
Lighting to the park benches is provided by narrow beam LED spotlights with gobo attachments to provide a dramatic moving leaf like pattern, while lighting to the tree trunk and canopy is provided by LED up lights in RGB colours. Using only energy efficient light sources, the installation’s total energy consumption is approximately 285W.
About the artists
Reinhard Germer obtained a Master of Architecture from the University of the Arts in Berlin and a postgraduate Diploma in Lighting Technology from the Technical University of Ilmenau, Germany. An architect with extensive international experience in lighting design, he has a strong interest in active lighting of public spaces.
Fiona Venn has an Associate of Arts, (Interior Design) from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco and a Bachelor of Arts (Japanese and International Marketing) from the Dublin City University. She currently is enrolled for a Masters of Illumination Design at the University of Sydney. She currently serves on the NSW Chapter committee of the Lighting Society.
Tim Geary obtained a Bachelor of Industrial Design from the University of Western Sydney and a Certificate IV in Design Fundamentals at Lidcombe TAFE. He has completed product design internships in the United Kingdom and enjoys producing lighting environments, visualizations and lighting product design.
